One really amazing book to read to your kids is the Lorax by Dr. Seuss. It’s a very groovy book reflecting the time in which it was published, 1971.
The Lorax chronicles the plight of the environment and the Lorax (a mossy, bossy man-like creature resembling an Emperor Tamarin), who speaks for the trees against the greedy Once-ler. As in most of Dr. Seuss works, most of the creatures mentioned are original to the book.
The book is commonly recognized as a fable concerning industrialized society, using the literary element of personification to give life to industry as the Once-ler (whose face is never shown in any of the story’s illustrations or in the television special) and to the environment as the Lorax. It has become a popular metaphor for those concerned about the environment.
So in other words, it’s a very smart book loved by all whether you’re a tree hugger or not. The drawings are fun and really well done in that Seuss-ian style but the story is the bets part. It’s a great way to introduce your children to the ideas of:
1) Protecting and respecting environment
2) Being kind to animals
3) The importance of trees
4) Recycling
5) What could happen to mankind if we don’t heed the words of the Lorax
This book is a gem from my childhood and I now enjoy sharing with my kids as well. My 3 year old loves it so much, she took it to school on share day to exemplify something she loves beginning with the letter L.
