Here is a collection of six books I love and my children love that I thought I’d share with you. This is just a small list of books and they are in no particular order.
1) Green Eggs and Ham – Dr. Seuss
I am Sam. Sam I am. The book Green Eggs and Ham is one of my all time favorites. I started reading it to my children when they were around 1.5 yrs old. My oldest learned the color green from the book and she loved her to say Samham. My youngest was obsessed with “eggies” after the book. Green Eggs and Ham is a fun, fun rhyming book from the goofy Dr.Seuss. It’s a great read with a guaranteed payoff of love from your children.
2) The Giving Tree – Shel Silverstein
The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein is an amazing book. It’s such an emotional little tale that is so deep in meaning and feeling. It’s the story between a boy and a tree and the love the tree has for the boy. This is a story that your kids will interrupt you every page to ask why does the boy do this and that etc. But the real love I have for this book is as an adult right now. It’s such a great commentary on the social deficiencies of people and their self centered attitudes towards others, always taking from others but rarely giving. It’s a great fable for your children to learn from to be grateful for what they receive. Silverstein’s the Giving Tree is a wonderful story!
3) Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs – Judi and Ron Barrett
Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs was a great book before it was a movie. The book is wonderfully illustrated and asks the question, “Have you ever thought of what it would be like to squashed by a pancake?” It’s a goofy story about giant food raining form the sky and the consequences of this anomaly. It’s a fun read that your kids will really get into.
4) Stellaluna – Janell Cannon
Stellaluna is a beautifully illustrated tale of a little bat named Stellaluna who gets separated from her family and ends up living with a family of birds. It’s a very sweet little tale that will make your kids happy after they were concerned for Stellaluna’s well being. This one was a huge favorite by parents in the early-mid 1990’s at the bookstore I worked at as well.
5) Dr. Seuss’s ABC Beginner Books
Learn your ABC’s from Dr. Seuss in a fun rhyming way. What else can I say?
6) Don’t Bump the Glump and Other Fantasies – Shel Silverstein
Don’t Bump the Glump and Other Fantasies is one of Silverstein’s weirdest books. It’s a poetry collection of goofiness accompanied by some crazy drawings of the bizarre creatures Silverstein describes. It’s one you can read a little at a time and laugh and laugh because of it’s silliness.
