What Would Dad Do honors Jim Henson as our dad of the week!
James Maury “Jim” Henson (September 24, 1936 – May 16, 1990), was one of the most widely known and odder puppeteers of the 20th Century–and American history for that matter. Henson was the creator of the Muppets, which went on to become Sesame Street and in the 70’s spawned the Muppet Show and in the 1980’s Fraggle Rock. Henson wowed kids with his magic hands and genius mind while also creating movies like the Dark Crystal, Labyrinth and and is responsible for Yoda and other creatures like Jabba the Hut in the original Star Wars saga.
Jim Henson is the father of all modern puppeteering in the world and his influence can be felt tremendously through all cultures and medias.
Henson was the father of Kermit the Frog, Fozzy Bear, Big Bird, Cookie Monster, Bert and Ernie and Miss Piggy. The world lost a great one when Henson’s suddenly died on May 16, 1990, of streptococcus pneumonia. Henson was married to his wife Jane in 1959 and they had five children: Lisa, Cheryl, Brian , John and Heather. As of 2009 Jim Henson’s children Brian, Lisa, Cheryl, John and Heather run the Jim Henson company: Brian and Lisa serve as co-chairs and co-CEOs.
They still continue his magic to this day carrying on the traditions of their father with great shows like Dinosaur Train and the highly anticipated Fraggle Rock movie and the sequel to the Dark Crystal.
As a father and a man who was tremendously influenced morally and creatively by the Muppets and Henson’s other creatures on my way to adulthood–I can’t say enough how important it is to introduce your kids to his work.
The original Muppet Show and Sesame St. DVD’s have been compiled and released in recent years and we own several. My kids LOVE them and I do too. It’s awesome seeing guests on the show in a wide range from Paul Williams to Harry Belafante and Elton John. I can’t say enough how education, fun and inspiring the muppets still are today. So give your kid a ooh helping of jim Henson along with their vegetables and life will be good.
Jim Henson was a genius who possessed a creativity and a love for education that will live a long time. We salute you Jim, as our dad of the week and are grateful to you for your creation of Kermit the Frog, the Dark Crystal, Fraggle Rock, Sesame St. and more.
