Potty training can be a painful process. Luckily my oldest daughter’s experience was really easy and actually kind of fun. It sometimes seems like forever ago that she wore diapers, but she’s only 3 and a half.
Our oldest daughter was helped by a number of factors.
1) She goes to pre-school
2) She has older cousins that are close to her age that are already potty trained
3) She was fairly advanced socially
Now you all my ask, how the hell does #3 factor in and hat does being socially aware have to do with going on the potty? Answer: A LOT.
It’s fairly simple psychology. My daughter wanted to pee on the potty like her friends, her cousins and like mommy and daddy. She was motivated by her social surroundings to succeed.
We encouraged her a great deal and rewarded her with excitement and sometimes a treat or the watching of a favorite movie TV show etc. By 2 and a half she was completely potty trained.
We had a big help at school too because they helped to establish a routine for her. We also used a great website as reference that I’ve added to our blogroll :POTTY TRAINING TIPS
They are the authority on everything potty training.
For my daughter it was all about encouragement when there was discouragement, like when she’d sit there and nothing would come out, or she’d pee her pants or pee on the floor. Don’t get mad, just tell them it’s cool, it happens to everyone including their friends, cousins etc. When she heard that it happened to others specifically people she knew, it allowed her to get past it faster and to move on.
I cannot stress enough how important the social aspect of potty training is in the development of your child’s confidence. We also used a great book called Once Upon a Potty — Girl“>once upon a potty starring Prudence and written by Alona Frankel.
She wrote a boy version too. Once Upon a Potty — Boy
This book was a huge help to psychologically boost our daughter’s confidence. I’ve also compiled a list of some potty’s below and some great books to accompany them.
Good luck and e-mail me with questions if you have any. I’m a dude, we love to talk about poop!
