Top 15 Greatest Sesame Street/Muppets Ever

kermit

Sesame Street and the Muppet Show are two amazing gifts that Jim Henson left us before he passed on (and become one with the Dark Crystal). These shows shaped us culturally and educated us as children and they continue to do the same for our children.

While the Muppet show is now longer in syndication, you can get it on DVD. For some time there were whispers that a new Muppet movie is in the works at Henson studios. However Sesame St. is still running strong and the newest season seems to be it’s strongest in many years.

15. Telly Monster : Telly is a maroon, neurotic monster and was initially conceived as a monster obsessed with watching television; his name is short for Television Monster. Telly is kind of annoying but he has his fans. He’s much better and more tolerable when free from Baby Bear’s speech impediment.

14. Rowlph the Dog : The piano playing gruffy voiced dog was filled with loves and love songs and was a staple on the muppet show form its conception.

13. Abby Cadabby : She’s cool, she’s hip and she’s a fairy with magic powers. She’s part of the new school regime of Sesame St. created by Henson’s children.

12. The Count : Long before, True Blood, Twilight and Anne Rice, the Count made being a vampire cool. Rather than being obsesed with drinking blood, the count simply liked to count. He made children unafraid of vampires.

11. Oscar the Grouch : The grumpiest muppet alive is the green and grimy Oscar the Grouch. Though he talks tough, he’s a big softie and always gives in to his good side. with his pet Slimey, Oscar has filled our garbage cans with fun moments on Sesame St.

10. Cookie Monster : C is for Cookie and Cookie starts with C! That is the theme song of this blue furred monster who craves cookies. Cookie Monster is one of the most iconic monsters ever created and his misuse of the English language is widely recognized. Luckily he as created before the time of health food craziness or today he might be known as carrot monster.

9. Grover : Grover is the worrisome, effeminate and hyper active monster also covered in blue fur. Grover’s list of faults and phobias could easily be classified as a new psychological disorder but his comical attributes cannot be undervalued.

8. Gonzo : “Gonzo the Great”, is the alien bird creature and one of Kermit the Frog’s closest buds. His goofy sense of humor and clumsiness often find him involved in tons of shenanigans.

7. Bert : Bert is Ernie’s best buddy with a uni-brow. He’s a pigeon loving, yellow man that laughs like a goat and is constantly frustrated by his goofy pal.

6. Miss Piggy : She’s tough. She’s in love with herself and her looks and she’ll beat anybody down who gets in the way of the love of her ‘Kermie”. Miss Piggy is an iconic female figure a girl can look up to.

5. Elmo : Elmo is arguably the most popular muppet of all time. He has become a merchandising goldmine for the Henson family and his talking toys have become staples in families for the last 10 plus years. While many of our generation find his voice and lack of comprehension and his laugh—completely annoying, our children seem to love him. Maybe it’s his naivety, not sure.

4. Fozzy Bear :Fozzy is a big doofy, brown bear who is Kermit’s best and most trusted pal. He’s a struggling stand up comedian but not too short on heart. Waka, Waka Waka!

3. Ernie: Ernie is the goofball pal of Burt. His trademark laugh and iconic friendship with Burt have got him into many adventures and predicaments. Ernie is one of the major pilars of Sesame Street.

2. Big Bird : He’s the big yellow bird with the intellectual capacity of a 5 year old, but Big Bird is one of the first characters anybody thinks of when they talk about Sesame St. In the 70’s, Big Bird was the “Elmo” of that time. He was the figurehead of Sesame St. and a very popular character. To this day his fanbase is still strong but he’s not featured as strongly as he once was (which is disappointing to some), but he’s still an important part of the show. Big Bird was even the star of his own movie: Sesame Street Presents: Follow That Bird

1. Kermit the Frog : Kermit is the muppet king. His personality and charisma are what made the muppet show. Jim Henson created and voiced the character and he was the icon in which the world was enthralled with. Kermit made his mark on TV but followed up with a successful movie run as well. He has papeared everywhere from the white house to the Good Morning America and is a staple float in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. Kermit made America know what the term “muppet” meant. Kermit The Frogthe only choice for #1.
