Hey dads!
Do you ever get freaked out when your baby starts to cry? Are you sure? Do you know how to stop a crying baby?
Yeah, I’m talking to you, Mr. Joe Cool and Mr. That’s How I Roll. I’m talking to all of you suave dudes that when the cologne comes off, you’re not sure what to do with the baby. Realistically I’m also talking to every man in general who just becomes a dad for the first time.
Being a new dad isn’t easy. Why?–some women might ask.
Men are cut from a different mold than women and it really is magnified when comparing how each handles a baby for the first time.
As a new dad, it’s easy to get freaked out those first few weeks. Everything is new and your not used to holding this cute little blob that is so helpless and so needy. A baby’s cries are gut wrenching so as Dad’s we tend to freak out a bit when the baby cries. Especially when that baby will not stop crying, and crying and crying and crying. Women seem to handle this situation much, much better. I know you ask yourself, “How the hell do I soothe this crying baby?”
So all you new dad’s out there getting freaked out, take a deep breath and chill out. Here are some easy tips to help you calm down your crying baby and calm you down as well.
1. Stay Calm
When you remain calm, your baby senses it and it helps calm them. If you are irritated, impatient and out of whack, your baby will never calm down.
2. Swaddle Your Baby
A really great method is to wrap the infant in a smooth soft blanket. This will give he/she a sense of security and the familiarity of the safety of their mother’s womb. This is probably the best way to calm your baby and the most effective before the are 6 months old.
3.Hold your baby
In any situation, regardless of what the problem is, holding your baby and showing them security with a warm snuggle is always helpful. Sometimes a baby is just lonely or may be worried or fearful of something. Holding them reinforces that someone is there that loves them and again gives them the feeling of closeness they had in their mother’s womb.
4.Take your baby to a dark quiet room
Your baby may be overwhelmed by too many people, too much noise etc. If your baby is shutting its eyes and turning its head away from the noise or situation, that’s a good sign that baby is overstimulated. Get away from the situation and let your baby find some peace.
5.Use white noise
When your child was in the womb it was a very noisy place as they heard everything their mother did. Your baby may find comfort in hearing a continuous rhythmic sound like a humidifier, fan, air conditioner, clothes dryer or the sound of nature, etc.
6. Feed your baby
Sometimes it’s just that simple, your baby is hungry. Try a bottle or some food if they are old enough.
7. Burp the baby
Gas can be a big reason your baby is crying. Burp them if they have eaten recently and you might be surprised at how the sounds that come out of both ends, soothes their little cries.
8. Talk soothingly to your baby
Sometimes it’s just that hearing your voice is all it takes to make a cry turn into a smile.
9.Play music or sing to your baby.
Babies love music, whether it’s classical music, Bob Marley, or some ambient/outer spacey techno –your baby will love it. They especially love when you sing to them.
10. Change your baby’s position
Sometimes moving your baby is all they need. They are uncomfortable in their current position and need to move. Imagine you were sleeping on your arm funny and it hurt your neck and your arm fell asleep. You can move but your baby can’t. Give them a hand.
11. Change the diaper, Check for diaper rash
Okay men, now it’s time to man up. Don’t be afraid of a diaper. If your baby needs to be changed or has a rash, just change their diaper and put some ointment on the rash.
12.Check to see if your baby is too warm or cool
This is just common sense.
13.Take Your baby outside
A change of lighting and scenery can do a baby good. It sometimes startles them into a new sense of wonder.
14. Bring your baby to bed with you.
You can do this for a little while or a long while. Just make sure you put the baby down in a safe place where she won’t be in danger of being crushed/suffocated–where you can stay close and still touch them.
15. Distract your baby with a toy
The toy can be colorful, mad of cool shapes, make sounds, play music etc. Anything that distracts them is good.
