As February comes to a close, What Would Dad Do has decided to do a different take on the Dad of the Week. This week rather than pick one person and honor their ‘Dadness”, I’m going to honor 5 great people that we as Dad’s need to show some props to. Each of these 5 men have given us great joy because of their achievements–that span all across the board.5 great men and 5 great dads!
So as a Dad all I can say is thank you. And without further delay…here they are.

1) George Washington Carver:
Carver was born a slave and later, as a free man, he earned his college degree and in 1896 he joined the staff of Tuskegee Institute as director of the department of agricultural research, retaining that post the rest of his life. His work won him international accolades and Carver’s efforts to improve the economy of the South included the teaching of soil improvement and of diversification of crops. He discovered hundreds of uses for the peanut, the sweet potato, and the soybean and thus stimulated the culture of these crops. But most importantly he is the man that invented PEANUT BUTTER!
Q: What would a Dad Do with out Peanut Butter?
A: Scream! AHHHH!!!!

2) Quincy Jones:
What more can you say than that name…Quincy Delight Jones, Jr. Jones rose to prominnence as vice president at Mercury, breaking the executive color barrier there. It’s there where he began to compose for films and television, including scores for The Pawnbroker (1965), In Cold Blood (1967), and The Wiz (1978). He coproduced the film The Color Purple (1985) and was responsible for several TV sitcoms. From 1979 to 1987 he produced Michael Jackson’s chartbuster albums, catapulting the singer to superstardom. Jones also founded (1980) a record company, established (1990) Vibe magazine, and formed (1991) Qwest Broacasting. Quincy Jones brought us music and much, much more. Most importtantly as a dad he brought us music, Michael Jackson and He also scored for television, including the shows Roots, Ironside, Sanford and Son, and The Bill Cosby Show.

3) Jackie Robinson:
If you’re a dad or an American for that matter and you don’t know who Jackie Robinson was, you should be tarred and feathered. Jackie is the icon of my favorite team, the Los Angeles Dodgers and the first African-American player in the modern major leagues, for the Brooklyn Dodgers. In 1962 Robinson became the first African American to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.Jackie paved the way for every black athlete who has ever played a professional sport.

4) Lonnie G. Johnson:
Summer would suck without the invention of Lonnie Johnson. Lonnie G. Johnson is best known as the inventor of the Super Soaker water gun. The Super Soaker was the top selling toy in the United States in 1991 and 1992. Johnson worked for the US Air Force
and NASA on the Galileo Jupiter probe and Mars Observer project and was even a nomination for astronaut training before he became the god of squirt guns and to his credit has more than 40 patents.

5) Samuel L. Jackson
Sam Jackson is a cool dude that makes any film better. He’s best known for his role as a Bible-thumping hit man Jules Winfield in Pulp Fiction. Although he had already appeared in other big hits such as Jurassic Park (1993) and Menace II Society (1993), Jackson was a rarely recognized supporting actor who was just waiting for a chance to prove he had leading man capabilities when he appeared in Pulp Fiction. As A dad Jackson has given us everything from Snakes on A Plane, to Jedi Powers. In Star Wars, Sam Jackson was Mace Windu, the Jedi who actually defeated and deformed the Emperor Palpatine before Anakin Skywalker betrayed him, cut off his arm and caused his death.
