Disney and Marvel are a match made in heaven after all–maybe. Well today all of us “geek dads” got a great surprise when Disney announced that they will be producing a new animated show based on Marvel’s famous super hero squad, the Avengers.
As a dad, and a comic book artist and full fledged nerd, I was excited to hear this series finally confirmed for development. My oldest daughter who is 3.5, LOVES super heroes. She loves all the ones I do and religiously watches shows like Batman the Brave and the Bold and Justice League on DVD with me as well. Finally Marvel has a new animated series based on the “Real” Avengers. In the 90’s Marvel did a series based on the Avengers but it was awful, and in the early 2000’s they did another one, but the team was lame and lead by Ant Man and it had no major characters on it. RIght now the Super Hero Squad is currently running on Cartoon Network, but I have been waiting for this forever.
The original Avengers lineup included. Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Ant Man, the Wasp and the Hulk.I loved the Avengers as a kid and I’m excited that my children will get to experience them much better and much more than I was able to because of this. “Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes” introduces the characters through various content platforms, including the upcoming feature films “Iron Man 2” in May of 2010, “Thor” in May of 2011 and “Captain America” in July of 2011, all building up to the Avengers theatrical film in 2012. Marvel/Disney plans to release the series on Fall 2010 as a precursor to the movies so young fans can be reeled in prior to the Avengers release in 2012. Marvel Animation/Disney announced today that, the animated series features 52 episodes targeted at kids 9-14 and will be run on Disney XD.
Marvel has released two Avengers DVD’s in the last few years as well, following the “Ultimates” universe which is an alternative re-imagining of the charters in the Marvel Universe and the Ultimate universe is traditionally despised by most die hard Marvel fans.
If you’re interested in introducing your kids to super heroes, here’s some great stuff I have picked out for you. ALL of it I have and my 3.5 year old daughter watches it with me–even if some of it is geared more for older kids and adults. In a nutshell, kids love superheroes and some of the stories are great learning lessons. So check them out!
