WWDD Dad of the Week for March 8th 2010, David Bowie

As a Dad who prides himself on introducing my kids to cool, fun music that is not just centered around children, my kids love David Bowie. I first introduced Bowie when my oldest daughter was about 2.5. She loved it immediately and after she heard some of his music (mostly 80’s stuff) kept singing China Girl. She also loved the music in it and kept making me play it over and over again.

I never realized that David Bowie had such fun, cool and great music for kids but then we moved onto Spaceoddity when she got a little older around 3. It was with the song Spaceoddity, I first introduced my daughter to the concept of outer space. She obviously struggled with it at first but I do believe she gets it now. I showed her the stars in the sky, images of planet Earth, maps and Star Wars. This just enhanced the song for her and she loved that it was about outer space, the stars and a man in a spaceship, like Luke Skywalker. Introducing her to David Bowie has now lead to the Beatles, specifically Yellow Submarine which she even sings on Beatles Rock Band.

It’s so amazing to see a 3.5 year old sing the Beatles, David Bowie and even Styx, Come Sail Away. But for us, it all started with David Bowie who really has cool music for kids and adults. David Bowie’s music had now turned into education. And it kept going and going with Ziggy Stardust and she was blown away by his David Bowie’s crazy costumes which I showed her on a DVD I had of him. She loved the concept of “Spiders from Mars” and called them the itsy bitsy spiders from Mars. It was just so cool to see her dig David Bowie’s music and get educated by it at the same time.

Then last night she saw Labrynth for the first time. She flipped out. David Bowie has now become an obsession with her. She loved it, loved his music in the film and was just enthralled with the movie. Even though it’s a bit dark, I know she can handle it as she loves Jim Henson’s the Dark Crystal. David Bowie is such an amazing icon to introduce to a kid, I highly suggest it. He’s so cool, such an innovator, a great musician, a solid actor, and a creative genius. Bowie has truly made great music throughout his career and most certainly it is cool, great whatever you wanna call it, music for your kids. Look, there’s a time and place for kids music, but I highly suggest introducing your children to David Bowie. He makes fun music for kids.

Here are the albums my daughter loves because they have really cool, fun, trippy kind of music, as well as new wave, upbeat and fast paced songs to jump around to. Since watching Labrynth last night, she now wants that soundtrack too.

Best of Bowie

Labyrinth: From The Original Soundtrack Of The Jim Henson Film

So for David Bowie’s fun style of life, music and creativity, I am suluting him as WWDD, Dad of the Week for 3/8/10. Bowie is also a dad, of two children. His fist son is now an acclaimed director named Duncan Jones who made his directorial debut in 2009 with the movie Moon, starring Sam Rockwell. It was an amazing movie and it’s obvious the creative apple didn’t fall far from the tree. He also had a beautiful daughter with current wife and supermodel Iman. Daddy Bowie you make some awesome kids and awesome music for kids.
