WWDD? Celebrate National PI Day – 3.14

As parents we are all forced to endure education a second time through our child’s homework. Well for some of us, we get to relive the things we hated. For me it was Math. I was and am still to this day, so not a math person. BUT, I was always a fan of PI, AKA 3.14. Circles are cool.

Well tomorrow is a day for not only all Math enthusiasts and assorted geeks around the world but even folks like me who loathe equations can appreciate. March 14, today as International Pi Day! No, not your grandma’s apple pie, but the famous constant, equal to the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter.

If it’s not obvious enough, the reason Pi Day is celebrated on March 14 is because its first 3 digits are 3.14 (Pi = 3.1415926535…)

Ironically, March 14 also happens to be Albert Einstein’s birthday.

If you parents out there like me don’t recall, Pi is an irrational number, meaning that the sequence of its decimal digits continues to infinity without repeating itself. In some sacred circles it is said that the favorite way of celebrating Pi Day among geeks and other Mathematical cults in America, is the ritual of eating a pie (any pie) while reciting the first hundred digits of Pi.

In 2009, the U.S. House of Representatives passed House Resolution 224, designating March 14 “National Pi Day.”

So for fun, here’s what my kids and I are doing to celebrate Pi. We are going to eat ‘pi’ foods…not just Apple pie and fruit pies….There are m any creative ways exist to do this.

First, there’s the punny approach, like eating pineapple, pizza, or pine nuts and drinking pink lemonade or pineapple juice etc. Second, there’s the shape approach, like making cookies or pancakes shaped like pi or making a pie with a pi cut out of the center of the crust.

Of course, whatever you do, Pi Day is simply incomplete without eating pie, even if you don’t feel artistic enough to carve the pi symbol out of the top. I foresee a dutch apple pie from Claimjumper in our future! But I think for National Pi day we are going to have Pizza Pie for lunch, Pot Pies for dinner and for breakfast it’s going to involve PI-napple!

Enjoy the day!
