WWDD Dad of the for the week of 3.15: Dr. Seuss

Dr. Suess is one of my all time favorite people. He was an amazing visionary, gifted with a beautiful and whimsical artistic ability to draw and create worlds full of amazing characters. But not only was he gifted with the pencil but he was a wonderful poet whose rhymes and stories are ingrained in every generation of children born in the last 60 years. Dr. Suess is responsible for writing arguably the greatest volume of children’s books ever.

His real name was Theodor Seuss Geisel born on March 2, 1904 – September 24, 1991. Though he was not a real doctor, Dr. Seuss was his pen name that he published over 60 children’s books under. His work was often characterized by imaginative characters, rhyme, and frequent use of trisyllabic meter.

Dr. Seuss most celebrated books include the bestselling Green Eggs and Ham, The Cat in the Hat, and One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish. Numerous adaptations of his work have been created, including eleven television specials, three feature films, and a Broadway musical–including the annual holiday special, How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

Everybody, every parent should know who Dr. Seuss is. You should all know his most famous books. But there are so many more that fly under the radar. One of my favorites, and my 3.5 year old daughter’s favorite is the Lorax. This is one of Dr. Seuss’ most underrated books and is more releavant today for it’s environmental and political commentary than it was when he wrote it. It’s a very disturbing, yet a realistic look at industrialism and the way it’s changing the world–in not so good a way.

I have covered the Lorax before on WWDD, and I also collected the cartoon from YouTube.

In honor of Dr. Seuss, Read Across America is an initiative on reading created by the National Education Association. One part of the project is National Read Across America Day, an observance in the United States held on March 2, the birthday of Dr. Seuss.

So Teddy G! Dr. Seuss! You are one of the men I personally look up to as an artist and a creator. You’re work will stand the test of time and I thank you for being alive and leaving us this treasure of work the human race will treasure forever.

Here is a link to some great Dr. Seuss books I highly suggest for your kids. You can’t go wrong with any of them!
