P.W. Herman. The man, the myth the legend. In the 1980’s, Pee Wee was a fixture in everyone’s house. His TV show, Pee Wee’s playhouse was a ground breaking wacko-fest loaded with retro-goofiness. Pee Wee was the fixture and the ring leader of this circus of freaks. But the epitome of Pee Wee Herman’s career will always Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure . It’s an amazing ride of insanity, creativity, laughs and an unforgettable musical score. If you’re looking for a great movie to share with your kids, Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure

In case you were living in a cave during the 1980’s –Pee-wee Herman is a childlike adult who loves his bike more than anything else in the whole wide world. Francis Buxton, is a chubby, spoiled, immature adult neighbor, who is celebrating his birthday. All he wants for his birthday is Pee-wee’s bike as his present, but Pee-wee refuses to sell it. So Frances steels it and thus begins Pee Wee’s Big Adventure as he chases his bike all across the country. Pee-wee’s Big Adventure is a 1985 adventure comedy film directed by the ever creativeTim Burton in his full-length directorial debut, starring Paul Reubens as Pee-wee Herman. Reubens also co-wrote the script with Phil Hartman and Michael Varhol.
My daughter was 1.5 when I first introduced her to Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure
. She fell in love with it immediately. The beginning sequence where Pee Wee’s automated breakfast is made was her favorite part. She would make me play it over and over and say, “Pee Wee dad, again, again.” Just in case you’ve forgotten, here’s a YouTube reminder. This is perhaps the greatest 8 minutes of the film.
And then of course Pee Wee’s famous musical number. TEQUILA!
Okay, so what if Pee Wee is this weird man-child with the maturity of an 11 year old and in a strange 1950’s style suit and bow tie wearing blush and big shoes. Yes Pee Wee is bizarre, but that’s what you’re kids like. Why do kids love Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure
one might ask. Here is the answer.
1) Visuals
2) Music
3) Visuals and music together
It’s pretty simple, Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure
is loaded with great eye candy like; crazy colors, strange over sized toys, funny looking and funny acting people, gags, and retro/yet customized gadgets and trinkets. Everything is just like real life but warped…Even the spoiled OLD rich kid, Frances.
Then Danny Elfman’s contribution is just a fantastic, stand alone score. Combined with the images and the action, it forms the backbone of the movie. Rent it or buy it ASAP. It will eb one of those movies your kid of any age will love and watch again and again!
