My 3.5 year old daughter has now taken a liking to chewing gum. As parents I’m sure you know where this story is going. Yes, she got gum in her hair recently. My wife and I were at odds on which way to use to get the gum out. I wanted to use ice and she insisted on oil. As our debate heated up and our daughter became increasingly impatient and I just gave in and deferred to me wife. We used cold pressed extra virgin olive oil and it worked! Easily and fast.
So for all you parents out there who have felt my pain or will someday feel it, I’ve compiled a list of 6 “fool” proof ways to get gum out of hair.
1. Peanut Butter
1. You need”smooth peanut butter”. The Peanut oil is why the gum comes out so the more oil content in it, the better; preferably 51g of fat per 100g of peanut butter. The whole idea is to dissolve the gum with the peanut butter oil.
Do not use crunchy peanut butter because it has less oil content and do you really want peanut chunks in your hair in addition to gum?
2. The easiest way to do this is to apply peanut butter over the area and mix it in with a toothbrush. Using a toothbrush is much quicker and much less messy than using our fingers.Use long strokes with the tooth brush to work the peanut butter in and brushing down and outwards. If you need to, use a large spoon behind the hair area with the gum in it to act as a firm base to brush the peanut butter onto. If the gum is spread out no worries, just use more peanut butter.
3. Use a dry dish towel or small hand towel to pull on the peanut butter. The gum will come out with the peanut butter.
4. Now wash out the peanut butter with a good quality shampoo. Lather the shampoo in hair well before rinsing it off and repeat if desired. It usually takes 2-3 times to feel better.
2. Cooking Oil
1. Generously apply any type of cooking oil to the gum and the surrounding area of the hair that the gum is stuck in (olive, sesame, canola, vegetable, etc)
Wait 2 or 3 minutes. The whole idea is to dissolve the gum with the oil.
2. Use any type of comb and gently comb the gum out of the hair.
3. Now wash out the oil with a good quality shampoo. Lather the shampoo in hair well before rinsing it off and repeat if desired. It usually takes 2-3 times to feel better.
3. Hair Mousse
1. Apply as much mousse as you need to cover the entire area that the gum is stuck in, including the front and back. Use a generous amount and let it stay on there for a minute or two
2. Use any comb and gently comb the gum out of the hair.
3. Wash your hair as desired.
4. Ice
1. Get an ice cube and put the ice the gum for about twelve to fifteen minutes.
2. Gently remove the gum. After being on ice for fifteen minutes, it should be hard enough to pull off easily.
5. Rubbing Alcohol
1. Use a q-tip or cotton ball to rub alcohol on the gum and in the surrounding area. After about a minute or so, it should come right off.
2. Wash your hair with shampoo ASAP because alcohol will dry out your scalp if left on
6. Toothpaste
1. Gradually put small sized amounts of toothpaste in your hair and onto the gum, until the gum starts to come out.
2. After the gum is out, wash your hair thoroughly with shampoo.
